Now that Maeve’s room is mostly done, the inspiration finally struck me for my big kid’s room. We have been talking about doing built-in bunk beds for years. They are two years apart and on the same schedule, and we inevitably end up in one of their rooms for all of the things anyway – so for the next few years, until they want otherwise we are building them a shared room.
Designing a space that would be suitable for both of them has its challenges. We have two polar opposites when it comes to the things they like, but I found a balance that I think is going to turn out beautiful!

I think the fact alone that they will have bunk beds was enough to sell them on the idea – but I have loved this bedding from Schoolhouse for years. It’s been on so many of my moodboards and I decided to pull it all together with an earthy, moody vibe. The whole room, including built-ins will be painted Mount Saint Anne by Benjamin Moore with trim and accents in Simply White.
We will be doing a desk with built in shelves next to the bunks and then one shared dresser with the rest of the room open for play.
Things to do:
- Paint
- Build bunk beds
- Create closet system
- Decorate!
We are using a contractor to built the custom bunk beds – there are so many ideas and tutorials on Pinterest but it is outside our wheelhouse to do ourselves. Sometimes hiring a job out is just the best option and I’m OK with that!
Sharing all the sources of my inspo below and I can’t wait to come back and share the progress and final result.
